Which will have a better 0-60 & 1/4 mile time: Dinan S2 E39 or the E60 M5?

I think the E60 is going to demolish the S2. AFAIK the S2 isn't THAT much faster than stock and the E60 will have more power, 500+ at least, and it will be lighter than the E39 as well.

Mercedes is putting up some impressive 0-60 times with their new AMG's as well as Audi with their new RS6. Now 0-60 isn't everything but I don't think that BMW want their E60 M5 to be slower than it's rivals.

lets see-
more power: check
less weight: check

= E60 is faster.

Now there's a great performance recipe

Does anyone know how much torque the new V10 will produce?

So let me get this straight, you buy a 03 M5 for 80K, then head over to Steve Dinan pay another 35K for the S2 package only to be waxed in 12 months by a stock E60 M5 right off the lot.

So who is getting the S2 now?

I think the person getting the S2 plans to keep the car long enough that the initial roll out of the next gen M5 will really have them foaming at the lips/ and or/ the kind of person who just wants to enhance and extract every last ounce out of the vehicle. for getting the performance benefits- which Im sure some woud debate- there is no doubt that the mods lower the value of the car- so its got to be someone who wants to keep and enjoy it.

Who among us wouldn't want the E39 with a 500+ hp V10? That's what Dinan is trying to approximate with the S2 and S3. Of course, you lose the improved suspension, active steering, upgraded brakes, and higher power to weight ratio. On the other hand, you lose the IKEA interior and B.S. Bangle styling, along with the putrid iDrive. hmmm

idrive

you would think idrive is easy, but it isnt.

The best way to sum it up is this: when you wallk into your home tonight, and its dark, do you want to:

a- flip a few light switches; or
b- move a computer controller over to "lights" then select the floor you wish to illuminate, then the room, and then the specific lights

somethings just dont need reinvention. this is one of those times.

a hidden pain in the neck part of idrive is passengers who dont know the system. they want to know how to dial in a radio station and youre stuck giving them a lesson, basically a computer lesson, while youre motoring along. I view iDrive as a big step backward. to me technology is there to make things easier or better, not more complicated.

on the positive side of things I think the location of the screen is good and the 7s interior is very pretty. Im not so sure what I think about the 5 since I havent seen it but it looks a little too luxury/lexus for a Bimmer.

I think our moderator (above) made a great point as far as the IDrive.

As far as the S2, I would have to say that it's elementary that a V10 is in most cases going to outpower a V8. In the case of the S2, I don't think that the E60 is going to "crush" it. I think it will be nominally faster, especially from 100 mph and up. Some points that I'd like to point out based on the comments made:

Firstly, the approximately $115,000 that one must pay for a complete Dinan S2 ($80,000 stock E39 M5 price + $35,000 Dinan modifications) is probably close to the price that the forthcoming E60 M5 will cost. I think everyone has pretty much concluded that the E60 M5 will cost considerable more than the E39.

Secondly, I wonder whether it would be more appropriate to compare the Dinan S3 M5 (which, if I'm correct, is still not out) to the E60.

Just some thoughts. :typing:

good (hypothetical) debate....

one point of contention....i don't think the price of the e60 m5 will be anywhere near the $110k of the s2 modified d39 m5. look at the new e55 at $76k and the rs6 at about $80k and i think you have your price target right there. it's not like the merc and audi are selling for over sticker or anything (well maybe a few rs6's but that won't last, just look at the cayenne and all the hoopla for that car and now they can't give 'em away). my guess is the new m5 comes in the high $70's and if they are priced higher they will be discounted.

I agree that the E60 M5 will be priced in the high $70K's to low $80Ks. The target market is spending in that range, and significantly above that will entice enthusiasts who would otherwise buy the M5 to consider more expensive machinery, i.e., Porsche Turbo, CL/SL55, even Ferrari/Lamborghini. I know BMW is selling to a sedan crowd, but value/performance ratio still counts.

I have yet to roll race with an E60, but I've gone 11.72 @ 121.04 on drag radials with the ESS VT550 kit on an otherwise stock E39 M5. This was before my meth injection was installed. I think an E60 would probably not catch me until 140-150.
