Coilovers

Hey all. I installed new wheels & tires on my M5. I like the look, but there are a few things wrong. First, I cant fit bigger tires on the front without rubbing. The front wheels have the "stretched look", and I'm not too big on it. Current sizes are 20X11 5X120 +28 on the rear and 20X10 5X120 +25 (+15mm spacer to clear struts) on the front. I want to be able to adjust the camber up front to accommodate more rubber. I currently have Eibach Pro springs on my car and want to upgrade to coilovers to complete it. Do you guys have any recs for which ones to go with? Here are a few shots of the new wheels. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

What are you running now?

I’ve been on my CKS coils for the last 80,000 miles.

I may go for something different.

Yes. I think that’s how you can name them. Randy and I went back and forth about what was what, until I sent him the same pics.

Very neutral.

I was very lucky with my RD Sways — as part of the initial batch. It’s too bad that their quality control spiraled shorty thereafter.

No, I have not tried that setting yet. I’ve never thought about changing the settings.

My setting was based on Trinity/Joe’s setting, when he was tracking his e60. The e60 felt very neutral with an oversteer bias — something I liked.

I don’t know how that would translate over to your lighter platform.

To OP.. you are going to run into major rubbing issues running coilovers and wider tires in the front unless you have some crazy wheel offset that is forgiving. You either rub on the inside if you dial in more camber or rub on outside almost no camber.. Ask me how i know.. Kwv3 are tops but expensive and not sure worth the cost after you add in corner balance/EDC delete kit you are close to $4k. If i had to do it again for sure not going KW when CKS has same execution for less. Unless comfort is a factor and that begs the questions why get coilover in the first place and run it in comfort since EDC already does that.

My experience with KWV3

1. You need 15mm spacer fronts minimum even with stock wheels and tires and rear no spacers. I have wider Dinan wheels and run 275/35/19 front tires and Dinan camber plates -2.1 deg camber (yes cheaper Dinan non-adjustable camber plates will work with coilover (at least KW). 275 Michelin PSS rubbed like a mofo on inside struts and went 17.5mm spacer.. wheels offsets matter here too. I run 295/30/19 rear. Dinan wheels suck for this since offsets push wheels even further inwards towards struts. Stock wheels you are looking at rubbing on the outside or fenders so pick your poison :grin

2. I have RD Sways.. i run middle hole rear and outer hole fronts.. I know other members (Fifty) run middle hole fronts and inner holes rear.. i tried that and way too much oversteer and front just did not feel right.. i was able to dial in the rebound on coilover just right where i still have all the grip and with the sways middle hole rear is still planted..I truly feel RD sways are mismatch for coilover but i was able to make it work to my liking.. I have M6 so M5 may not be as stiff.. on M6 it is just too stiff middle hole front and inner holes rear esp living in place with bad roads but subjective so others may like car really stiff

3. What i noticed right away with coilover was precision when cornering.. dialed up properly i could put the front tires within inches of where i wanted compared to stock suspension.. way more agility and with super grippy tires and wider track in front and rear there is stupid grip but then again why would it not be right after spending that much on suspension :frown

Coilovers are worth it and go with CKS unless you got money burning in your pocket for KW.. and please take it to a proper shop that knows what the hell they are doing and have experience installing coilover/corner balance

My old PSS after a hot lap, just as another pic for reference:

Any one live in a area with bad roads and Coilovers? I have not yet found a comfortable rebound and bump setting with Kwv3 that is optimal for winding roads and day to day driving.

Roads near me are pretty bad and sometimes i miss EDC but then i get on back/mountain curvy roads and the car with Kwv3 and stiffer dampening just sticks like glue to the road.. unbelievable grip and like a different car and then it starts to make sense why coilovers cost so much
