Coilovers

Lets talk coilovers:

I am looking around for a set of coilovers and I am willing to spend the money on the higher brands. I initially started looking at the normal ones like BC coilovers, CKS etc.
Then I came across Fortune Auto which do offer upgrades from the standard off the shelf stuff. But this got me thinking by the time I upgrade the Fortune coilovers to remote reservoirs etc, I am not far off the price of going higher end stuff.

I have been emailing BC Racing and to be honest they are a waste of time unless you buy off the shelf. I have emailed them numerous times and they keep loosing my previous emails even though I forward it on with the new email. Not a good start.

Then Fortune Auto came along. I do some searching on the net and come across their website and their design looks a lot better and is easier to make them more custom to my needs.

So this got me thinking, I am not wanting to buy off the shelf low end coilovers just to say I have coilovers. I have had the pleasure of riding in some cars with high end suspension and you can tell the difference. But this was over 6 years ago. Have the lower end manufacturers caught up the likes of Bilstein, KW etc?

Other problem is most of these lower end manufacturers have the shocks made in Asia. Higher end shocks are Europe or the USA.

So far the options I am looking at are:
KW V3, so so, not convinced.
Intrax, these seem the best to deal with so far.
Moton, pricey but good.
JRZ, really pricey.
I have still not decided if I want to add Fortune to that list yet. Edit: fortune do not offer 2 or 3 way adjustable for the E60.

I am looking for 2 way adjustable shocks with preferably a remote reservoir. 3 Way is a bit too much but willing to entertain.

So what experiences do others have with the above manufacturers or recommend so other brands.

I have read a few instances people have switched from KW to CKS and been happier. That got me thinking are they worth it. But I have rode in a ACR Viper and they have KW as standard and it rode well.

I found that the track I drive i lose shock performance as it heats up the oil. I even loose brakes its that tight and demanding.
If I am going to spend good money on suspension I might as well go for it.

Good to see many more options. Back in the day, not so much.

I'm running the bilstein EDC coils on my M5...this is the only option if you want to retain the functionality of your factory EDC. I love them, They have only the 3 settings but allow to to actually use the adjustability. The KW are great as well but if you want EDC functionality bilstein is the way to go

Yes it is. The SZL optical disc sends can messages to the EDC to stiffen corners at the right time.

IIRC you code out the EDC in the KOMBI and CAPPL, unplug the EDC module and then the steering adjustment is still active through the KGM.

In the E6x, the EDC module communicates on PT-CAN and controls the dampers. The dampers are magnetorheological and the default, non-energized setting is the stiffest. As current is applied to the electrical coil inside the damper, the compression and rebound damping are reduced. So, in effect, the system "fails" in the heaviest damping setting.

The E9x EDC is almost identical in operation and communicates over PT-CAN as well.

On the E6x however, the servotronic electrohydraulic valve on the steering rack is controlled by the KGM (karrosserie (chassis) gateway module) whereas on the E9x it receives its control current directly from the DME.

This makes trying to connect the two failures on the E9x more complicated where as on the E6x, PT-CAN data faults would make a logical correlation (KGM is the PT-CAN gateway to the DME for E6x.)

OP, what are you scanning the car with if there are no faults?

As for replacing the EDC, reprogramming the whole car for that is silly. The EDC module technically can be replaced without programming at all as the VIN is stored in it, but has no effect on its operation. You would want to have it coded to your chassis however as there may be some differences in the settings from the donor if say it came from an E90 and you put it in an E92. You can however program it using WinKFP with AIF write enabled so it records the VIN properly.

I speak from the experience of having parted out about 25 S85 powered E6x cars and preprogram all modules before I ship them using a bench flashing arrangement with an ICOM and KGM module. The same can be done with a footwell module, OBD port and ICOM (or USB OBD) for E9x. Reprogramming the whole car is wasteful and a good indication the dealers don't know how to use expert mode in ISTA/P where you can deselect modules for programming avoiding the "whole car" routine.

May I suggest that you try the coilovers with and without the sway bar upgrade.

IMHO! The sway bar upgrade works very well with the stock suspension, but when I get the coilvers, I took it off. I feel that I get more traction with stock away bars and dampers on stiffer setting.

In any case, you will need some time to play around with all the adjustments to find what suits you best. I would also suggest getting the car corner balanced from a good shop.

Please share your thoughts and experience with us.

It is going to be a learning curve for sure. I have done some research on sway bars v non sway bar and it does take time to play around with settings.
I plan on getting the setup corner weighted at some point.

Go Team Intrax

Been chomping at the bit to update you guys.
10 month project to fruition.

Got to vent yesterday in some disappearing internet ink (thanks Senad :angel) about some Haters and Hater wanna be's...
as I think anyone or any shop offering ANY thing for our aging platform should be given the benefit of the doubt.
The upside is far greater than the down side of 30 seconds of wasted time.

That being said, let it be known that my passion lies in my M, most importantly, the friendships I have made through it. This board has been a great asset to me,as it can be for new and old owners alike, and the integrity of what we put out reflects on us all.

Now for the fun stuff

The guys at Intrax are amazing to deal with.
Kimo was right about everything he said.

As you can see below, we used progressive springs and modified stock top mounts, and the alignment we achieved with the alignment pins in place.
Not ever going to remove the dampers to adjust the camber plates from below each time, however should be able to gain enough for race day.

I was able to put together a few rhythmic laps and a few good videos, just not at the same time lol
This was to be cool down, but they were closing and ran a partial on spaghetti hot PSS with a presentable vid

Looking good. Intrax was one of the coilover systems I was looking at.

In the end I got a smoking deal on a set of KW V3 coilovers, nearly went with Motons but the exchange rate with the CAD v USD killed the deal. At one time the CAD was around 1.07 CAD to USD, now it is 0.73. That exchange rate hurts even under $1000, never mind over $5000.
I have ordered some camber plates so waiting on them arriving and will install the suspension and looking into getting it corner weighted.

.73? Ouch...
What if you buy directly from EU or UK?

Which plates and how are they adjusted? Looks like you play with alignment specs. quite a bit.

That was a beautiful track you posted, the flagger stations are nicer than some US clubhouses lol
